Madeline's Story

Hi! My name is Madeline Hughes and I am 18 and a new freshman at Kennesmadelineaw State University. I have a passion for fashion and jewelry that started when I began taking jewelry classes when I was about 11. I took literally everything….from metal working to glass blowing to ceramics….I loved all parts of it. But as I got older, what I loved the best was jewelry making. Simple pieces that I could wear every day and that I couldn’t find at my normal haunts like TJ Maxx. I started with small inexpensive kits like you buy from Michael’s or JoAnn’s, and then just kept expanding.

This all probably would have gone nowhere except that my dad in 2012 started a new company and was selling products at our local farmers market to test them out. By that time I had made so many earrings that he suggested I make some garden inspired jewelry and bring what I had made to the market. I was surprised! The jewelry was a success, and I started to have people who came back for additional jewelry. The Bee Bracelets that I made especially for the market and to support local gardening and sustainability of our food supply were a big hit with adults and kids alike!

I have learned a lot over the last year…like that I should make two of most things because if I like it I will always want to keep it for myself….and that when someone asks you how long it took to make, the answer of “One episode of Vampire Diaries” really makes people smile. I have learned a lot about the hard work it takes to be an entrepreneur, and how not fun it is to take down a booth in torrential rain. Most of all I have loved how happy people are when they find something they love.

I just started at Kennesaw State University last month. I don’t know what I want to be yet…scientist, nurse, teacher, artist, entrepreneur…who knows. In the meantime, I want to continue to use art to create and support causes I care about. And it is time to see what happens if I expand to the internet, learn about e-commerce, and find ways to reach more people.

I hope you join me on this journey of blogging, creating, connecting and overall having a fun time!
